Gruyères - medieval town

The medieval town is an important tourist location in the valley of the Sarine River, and gives its name to the well-known cheese.

Gruyères stands in the midst of the Fribourg green pre-Alpine mountains. The medieval town presents sole architectural treasures in French-speaking Switzerland.

The tower of Chupia Barba (beard burned) where were questioned condemned to death. Several houses built about 1590-95, decorated armorial sculptures bearing above the doors.

You will be able to admire, in the centre of the principal street, the fountain where water spouts in 1755, after six months of titanic works. The passage and the fortifications of Belluard (boulevard) and the door on the walk path are the witnesses of glorious past.

The "Chalet", house recovered and rebuilt at this place. Facing, the souvenir shops installed in the house of Saint-Joseph Institute which functioned until 1925, date to which it was moved in Freiburg.

The castle of St-Germain is the postcard of all the country, more known under the name of Gruyeres Castle.

The castle, one of the most prestigious in Switzerland, is visited by some 200'000 people, which makes castle the 2nd historic site more visited of Switzerland.

The castle was bought by the canton of Fribourg in 1938, made into a museum and opened to the public. Since 1993, a foundation ensures the conservation as well as the highlighting of the building and the collection.
